87. How Communities Cultivate Accountability

Community really helps breed accountability. And when we're accountable to ourselves and to other people, it helps us continue to move the needle forward.

Stepping away from his usual setting at PhysioRoom, Denver's hub for performance-based rehab, Dr. Fix recaps a two-day conference he recently attended with his team. This event brought together over 200 healthcare professionals, each with their own stories and experiences from their practices. These weren’t just presentations and Q&As; they were intimate exchanges, moments of "I’ve been there," and collective brainstorming sessions to support one another.

What resonated most with Dr. Fix was the simple power of being surrounded by peers who understand the journey. This collective spirit provided a sense of contributing value to peers by sharing your own experiences, of solidarity in shared challenges and a celebration of progress and successes. It was a reminder that there's strength in numbers and that there's value in both tackling challenges and celebrating successes together.

Dr. Fix's takeaway for listeners is straightforward: Seek out your community. Be it a dedicated fitness group, a professional network, or even a hobby club — these are the spaces where support, motivation, and accountability naturally thrive.

Key Takeaways:

• Having a community of like-minded people can provide accountability and support in various aspects of life, including fitness, mental health, and personal development.

• Being around a group of people who are going through similar struggles can help individuals realize that they are not alone and that it is okay to ask for help.

• Celebrating wins along the way is important, as it helps to motivate and encourage continued progress.

• Being part of a community allows for the exchange of ideas and the opportunity to learn from others' experiences and successes.

Quotes:

  • "Sometimes it just takes being around those people and having a community and talking to other people that are dealing with the same stuff to help you realize that, to help you realize that you're not alone, that you're not the only one that's having a hard time with things." • "You need to find a community. You need to have a community, something that you're a part of, some group that you're a part of, that can help hold you accountable." (08:39 | Dr. Andrew Fix)
  • "Try to find your community. And how can you invest more into that and into those people? And just see where those relationships go, see what that flourishes into and see how by you being part of that community you end up really working on yourself and working on self-development and self-progression."
